Getting Started
The Too Much Love rule helps protect the integrity of your point program by limiting how many recognition points one user can give to the same person within a point allocation period. It is enabled for your entire organization by default.
If some employees or leaders need more flexibility when distributing their allocated points, admins can exclude them from the rule using teams. You can exclude one or more teams while keeping the protection in place for everyone else, or disable the rule for your entire organization.
For more information about how the Too Much Love rule works for employees, including what happens when someone reaches their limit, see What is the Too Much Love rule.
When to Use This Feature
- Excluding executives or senior leaders who need to send larger point amounts.
- Allowing managers or leadership teams to distribute their available point allocations without being restricted by the Too Much Love rule.
- Managing exclusions for a group of employees instead of maintaining individual exceptions.
- Keeping exclusions automatically up to date when employees join or leave a selected team.
- Disabling the Too Much Love rule across your entire organization when it is not part of your recognition program policy.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Open the Too Much Love rule settings
- From the admin menu, go to Platform set up.
- Select Recognition.
- Find the Too much love rule section.
You will see three options:
- Enabled for entire organization
- Enabled except for users in selected teams
- Disabled for entire organization
The rule is enabled for the entire organization by default.
Exclude selected teams
Use this option when most employees should remain subject to the Too Much Love rule, but specific individuals need an exception.
- Under Too much love rule, select Enabled except for users in selected teams.
- Search and select the team you want to exclude.
- Repeat these steps to add additional teams if needed.
- Click Save.
All users who belong to a selected team are now excluded from the Too Much Love rule. Private teams can also be selected.
Users who do not belong to an excluded team remain subject to the rule.
Note: Exclusions are managed by team. Individual users cannot be searched for or selected directly from the Too much love rule settings.
Manage excluded teams
You can update your exclusions at any time.
- Go to Platform set up > Recognition.
- Find the Too much love rule section.
- Confirm Enabled except for users in selected teams is selected.
- Add another team using Search for a team or remove a selected team from the list.
- Click Save.
If a user belongs to multiple teams, they are excluded from the rule as long as at least one of their teams is selected as an exclusion.
Team membership is checked automatically. When someone is added to an excluded team, they immediately become excluded from the Too Much Love rule. If they are removed from all excluded teams, the rule applies to them again.
Disable the rule for your entire organization
If your organization does not use the Too Much Love rule, you can turn it off for everyone.
- Go to Platform set up > Recognition.
- Under Too much love rule, select Disabled for entire organization.
- Click Save.
The Too Much Love threshold will no longer be enforced for any current or future user in your organization.
Re-enable the rule
You can turn the Too Much Love rule back on at any time.
- Go to Platform set up > Recognition.
- Under Too much love rule, select Enabled for entire organization.
- Click Save.
Changing this setting does not change users' point allocations, point allocation periods, or how the Too Much Love threshold is calculated.
Helpful Tips & Ideas
- Use your automated teams to manage exclusions for groups like executives, managers, or senior leaders.
- Keep the rule enabled for most users to help protect your point program.
- Team membership changes automatically update who is excluded from the rule.
- Users only need to belong to one excluded team to be exempt.
- Disabling or re-enabling the rule does not change point allocations or reset Too Much Love calculations.
FAQs
Q: Can I exclude an individual user from the Too Much Love rule?
A: Not directly. Exclusions are managed through teams. Add the user to an appropriate team, then select that team under Enabled except for users in selected teams.
Q: Can I exclude more than one team?
A: Yes. You can select as many teams as necessary.
Q: Can I select a private team?
A: Yes. All team types, including private teams, can be used for Too Much Love exclusions.
Q: What happens if someone belongs to several teams?
A: If at least one of their teams is selected as an exclusion, that user is excluded from the Too Much Love rule.
Q: What happens when someone is added to an excluded team?
A: They become excluded from the rule automatically. Team membership changes are reflected in near real-time.
Q: What happens when someone leaves an excluded team?
A: If they no longer belong to any excluded team, the Too Much Love rule applies to them again.

A: Yes. Select Disabled for entire organization and click Save. The rule will not apply to current or future users until you re-enable it.
Q: Does disabling the rule change users' point allocations?

Q: Where can I learn more about what employees experience when they reach the Too Much Love limit?
A: See What is the Too Much Love rule in the Kudos Help Center for more information about how the rule works when sending recognition.
